You need to succeed on a spell attack against the threat and then they need to fail a Charisma save. The real issue with using this spell as an attack on an unwilling character are the two separate checks that are required of you to make the spell work. Plane Shifts practical use for escapes is pretty apparent, especially given that it only has a 1 action cast time. If you’re about to take an amount of damage that you are sure will kill you and/or the party, you may need to use this to get you well and truly out of that bind. So, in regards to the gameplay itself, this spell mostly functions to move you and people around you away from a potential problem or closer to it.

These don’t have to be established realms that are reskinned from Wizards of the Coast, you can homebrew any realm and even have a multiverse type thing going on.

Thanks to this simple little spell, jumping between realms is a slice of very dangerous cake.Īs a DM, you now have free reign to set chunks of your campaign in brand new and exciting areas far removed from the realm it started on. The story implications that exist thanks to this spell are massive in number. A lot more powerful, of course, but completes the same function.

This spell is, for all intents and purposes, a glorified Teleportation spell. If you’re looking to get away from a threat, there’s not much further that you could go to do so than to evaporate from the realm entirely. This spell allows you to teleport yourself and a bunch of your buddies to a different plane of existence. A creature so transported must find its own way back to your current plane of existence. If the creature fails this save, it is transported to a random location on the plane of existence you specify. On a hit, the creature must make a Charisma saving throw. Choose a creature within your reach and make a melee spell attack against it. You can use this spell to banish an unwilling creature to another plane. If the teleportation circle is too small to hold all the creatures you transported, they appear in the closest unoccupied spaces next to the circle. If you are trying to reach the City of Brass, for example, you might arrive in its Street of Steel, before its Gate of Ashes, or looking at the city from across the Sea of Fire, at the GM’s discretion.Īlternatively, if you know the sigil sequence of a teleportation circle on another plane of existence, this spell can take you to that circle. You can specify a target destination in general terms, such as the City of Brass on the Elemental Plane of Fire or the palace of Dispater on the second level of the Nine Hells, and you appear in or near that destination.
